Core Challenge:  A big hit in District Two

What a great day of fun exercising in the sun!  Temple’s Lion’s Park was filled with approximately 100 youth and adults on Sunday afternoon, April 20, 2008, showing their skills at the District Two Core Challenge.  We had several youth who came just to see what it was all about, and after seeing the challenges, they could hardly wait to get signed up.
The challenges included the log throw, bent arm soldier hang, agility course, football throw sled pull, the hercules challenge, and the sprint race, which were  all fun and exciting—but the favorite seemed to be the sled pull.  It was great  to see and hear the support for all the races.  Youth participated by age and gender.  When it was  all said and done, many youth walked away with blue, red, and white ribbons.  And, of course, to stay with our District Two saying—“Everyone in SPJST is a winner”—no one left  until they received a door prize.
We had youth from Holland, Rogers, Academy, Bruceville, Salado,  and Temple join us.  Many parents were excited to hear the opportunties SPJST has to offer their children.
To add to our day, we were  honored to have a very big special challenge.  When I say big, I mean big.  Six hundred pounds, 30 feet  long, 22  feet tall, 16 feet wide, and eight firemen to get it going.  Fireman Thomas Pechal and  a group of firemen came and set up the “Quint Six Slide.”  The inflatable slide helped everyone understand a home escape plan in case of a fire.  There were two ways to get down from the top of the slide—a window or door.  Participants were able to make a decision which would be best to get out in case of a fire then slide down to safety.
We thank SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton member Thomas Pechal and the volunteers for taking time to teach all of us fire safety in such a fun way.  Thank you to the City of Temple for allowing us to use the nice facility of Lion’s Park.
Thank you to the Seaton, Holland, and Cyclone youth clubs for setting up food, water and face painting booths.  They were all a big hit!
I want to thank all the volunteers who attended and helped with Core Challenge.  It would not have run as smoothly without your help.
We plan to have Core Challenge again next year on Sunday, April  19, 2009.   Mark your calendars and join us.
