Martina Sablikova

Martina Sablikova was born May 27, 1987 in Nove Mesto na Morave, Czechoslovakia.  She is a Czech speedskater that confines herself to great distance races.

When she  was younger she loved playing basketball.  In 1998, Martina began skating, but it was difficult to practice because her homeland in Czechoslovakia was scarce in artificial ice tracks.  She traveled to different areas to work on some of her skating skills and gain experience.  Martina and her coach Petr Novak composed alternative unusual, training methods, which proved to be very beneficial for her against her competitors due to the low resources in her country.  She was the Czech Youth speedskating champion in 1999,2001, and 2004.  As the years passed, Martina kept getting faster and faster.  In Salt Lake City, Utah,in 2005, Sablikova had the junior world record in the 3,000m with a time of 4:00.69.  She won first in the 5,000m and third in the 3,000m in the 2006 European allround championship giving her fourth place.  Her results from the two races stunned many competitors.  Martina skated a world record in the 10,000m beating competitor Clara Hughes former time by more than 11 seconds in 2006.  At the 2007 European Speedskating Championship , Martina was victorious in the 3,000m and the 5,000m setting world record times to achieve her first major tournament.  She made a new 5,000m world track record at the 2007 World Single Distance Speed Skating Championships.

An indelible mark in her career came when she was in Calgary, Canada in March of 2007, because she became the first speedskater to skate a 10,000m below the low 14 minutes when she did an amazing 13:48.33.  In March 2008, Sablikova received the gold at the 5,000m track at the World Single Distance Championships in Nagano, Japan.  Martina was really in high gear at the 2009 World allround Championships by dominating the 3,000m and 5,000m tracks and creating a new Czech national record at the 500m track with a time of 40.28 seconds.  This was the first allround medal in her strong career.

At the fantastic 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Martina won two gold medals in the ladies 3,000m and 5,000m speedskating events. She became the second Czech woman to win gold in the Winter Olympics after Katerina Neumannova won with her 3,000m victory.  Martina also won the bronze in the 1,500m to have a nice Olympic outing.

The speedskater Milan Sablik is the younger brother of Martina Sablikova.  Martina and her brother Milan share a rare feat of being a sister and brother both capturing world records in the same sport at the same time.  Martina Sablikova also claimed one of the highest honors in sports when she was named the Sportsperson of the Year of the Czech Republic in 2007 and 2009.
